What's the story behind lighting the candles on the birthday cake?

We have Artemis, the Greek goddess of the moon,to thank for the birthday cake. She got moon shaped honey cakes to celebrate her birthday(Get it-moon goddess gets moon cake)and the rest of us followed suit with round cakes to celebrate on your birthday.
The idea of lighting one candle on your birthday cake for each year you have been around comesfrom the Greeks too.The superstition says that if you can blow out every candle with one breath after you make your wish,it will come true...as long as you tell no one what you wished.
There is also a belief that when you eat the words on a cake they will come true- so a bite of ''Happy Birthday" will bring you happiness.
Another tradition says that the way your birthday goes will set the pattern for the coming year- so try not to cry on that day,or you will for the next 364 days too.

Fact-What did the Latin scholar say to the birthday kid?
 Answer-"Carpe cakem"-seize the cake!
